I am looking forward to going home pretty quickly. Easter is around the corner, then we have a week of classes, then exams, and then I am back home for a little bit. I was trying to reach my previous employer to discuss possible summer hours. They have been impossible to get a hold of and I have tried both phoning and e-mailing. I got a little worried about having no work, so I applied at an Easter Seals Camp.
I love Easter Seals, I was a camper and volunteer for many years. They allow kids (sometimes adults) with physical and mental disabilities to attend camp, and have fun. At easter seals camps they are completely accessible to any ability and it is possible for ANYONE to rock climb, transverse the high ropes course, swim... the list goes on... Its a week of possibilities! I applied to a camp that I've never been at, but I'm guessing the camp atmosphere will be similar if not better. I had one interview with 2 of the programming staff, and it went well. They told me that they get over 500 applications for counsellor positions. I was lucky enough to get a second interview with a coordinator. I thought it went good as well.
A big thing about being camp staff is thinking on your feet. I was asked to think of a theme that we could use for a week, the first thing that came to mind was Plants vs. Zombies. If you do not know what it is, download it off of APPLE and play it. It sounds really absurd when you are trying to explain..' so the plants grow things and give you power to plant other things, and zombies attack you area of land, you try and stop them, if you do they win, if you don't they attack your house and eat your brains...' Basically its odd to explain, and is much easier to play. You should try it.
I was in class the other day and I received an email from the 3 coordinators asking me, if I wanted to become part of the Camp team for this summer. I teared up a little bit, I was so happy they offered me a job. For me, this will be 10 years of involvement in Easter Seals.
As a kid going to camp, I tried to write a quick summary of the day. I found some entries from my first year at camp. I said that 'when I am older, it would be cool to be a camp counsellor at camp and help the kids have a good time.' Thats what I want to do. Help children learn about themselves, allow them to succeed, help them when its needed and have fun!
